“Regeneration” by Pat Barker is a classic novel that delves into the impact of war on a generation of young soldiers. The story follows poets and soldiers Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen, who are sent to Craiglockhart War Hospital in Scotland in 1917. The hospital is run by army psychiatrist William Rivers, whose task is to treat and rehabilitate shell-shocked men.

As Rivers works to heal the psychological wounds of these traumatized individuals, he grapples with ethical questions about the nature of war and the responsibility of sending these men back to the front lines. “Regeneration” explores the brutal realities of war and the psychological toll it takes on those who experience it firsthand. The novel is considered a powerful examination of the human cost of conflict.
