Emily Dickinson (1830-1886), initially a vivacious and outgoing person, gradually withdrew into a reclusive existence. Despite being an undiscovered genius during her lifetime, only seven out of her 1,775 poems were published before her death. Dickinson demonstrated immense vision and a passionate intensity for life, love, nature, time, and eternity.
Initially labeled as eccentric, Emily Dickinson is now recognized as a major poet known for her depth, startling originality, and courage. In one of her verses, she wrote: “Assent and you are sane; /Demure you’re straightaway dangerous / And handled with a chain.”
